How to make yourself a winning contestant in the art contests?

Many artists think that they can win an art contest just with the talent. In fact there is more to winning an art contest than just your talent. If you are surprised to see certain works winning the contest because you think that they are not up to the mark according to your assessment then it could that it is not just talents that ultimately wins the titles in these contests. If you are participating in any of these contests then it is important that you understand the rules of the game. If you do not understand what it takes to participate and win these contests then you are only wasting your time.

Is it a contest that you should participate? Not all contests are meant for everyone. You will be in a better position to judge whether you want to be part of that contest or not. It will be based on the genre and the expertise level. You do not want to be part of professional artists’ category when you are just beginning. Choose the right contests. Just because you come across free art contests it does not mean that you should blindly join them. Sometimes, such an approach will be highly damaging to you. Look at the competitions more carefully to decide whether it will do you good or harm.

The next important factor to consider is do you have enough time. As an artist, you would know that creating an artwork is not a mechanical task but it evolves and that process takes a lot of time. You will therefore need to remember to sign up in a contest only when you have adequate time.

Do you understand the contest goals and guidelines fully? Many a times the guidelines document is totally ignored. Artists either do not take a look at it at all or look at it after they have finished their work. This is totally wrong, you should look at the guidelines even before you plan anything. Your planning will be based on the guidelines because you are required to develop something based on the requirements in the guidelines. This will explain why even when the most talented artist participates in the contests sometimes less talented work wins the award. It is because the guidelines are not followed. For the judges in the art contests, the guidelines serve as the standard. Even if they personally like your work, they will not be able to go by their personal whims and fancies but to adhere to the submission guidelines. If you are already a talented artist and if you are also going to pay attention to the guidelines fully then you will double your chances of winning the contests. You will therefore make sure that everything said in the contest regulations is followed to the last detail.

Do not start working on your masterpiece in the last minute. This will put you under unnecessary pressure. You will not be in a position to bring out the best in you. It is vital that you get started well in advance. If you fail to pay attention to these details and start in the last minute thinking that you could come with a brilliant work, you might as well come up with one but it will depend very much on your stars. This is certainly not the best way to increase your chances of winning the contest.

Finally, do not lose your individuality. You will need to make sure that your individuality comes through in your work. This is where you can set yourself apart from the rest of the contestants even if everyone is working on the same theme or genre.

Do not take part in any competition randomly. Find the best websites that list reputed art contests. Pick your contests from such websites so that you know that the contests are run by credible sources and that the judgements would be fair.

As you can easily see, it is not just your talents that matter. You will need to be carefully paying attention to number of other factors that control your success or failure. The good news is that many things that we discussed above are things that are within control. As long as you remember these factors, you will be able to win the competition or at least increase your chances of winning the competition. So get started with your efforts and find the best contests out there.
